The best way to apply mascara

Using the right technique is the key to perfect-looking eyelashes. We let you in on how to get your mascara just right!

The basics

Hold the brush horizontally and wiggle it back and forth from the base to the tip of the lashes.

Hold the brush horizontally and wiggle it back and forth from the base to the tip of the lashes. So far so good, but why isn’t every lash coated with the perfect amount of product? Here are a few tips & tricks to perfect your mascara application and lash care routine.

Make-up tip for better hold

To ensure a good hold, your lashes should be dry and clean. Before you start applying your mascara, make sure your lashes are clean and free of make-up residues, concealer or moisturiser. Such residues can have a negative effect on hold or cause smudging.

Favour light moisturisers and eye contour creams before doing your lashes.

Shaping tip: eyelash curler

It only takes a few seconds to curve and lift your lashes to dreamy new heights with an eyelash curler. Ever tried a heated one? The heat ensures a faster process and a longer lasting effect.

For most eyelash curlers, the classic rule applies: Curl first, then apply mascara! Doing it the other way around may cause some hairs to break or fall out. Remember to regularly clean the little rubber or silicone pads on your eyelash curler and replace them if they become porous or worn.

How to get your mascara right: Our secret tips

First powder tip

To stop mascara accidents from ruining your look and giving you racoon eyes, dust a generous layer of Invisible Loose Powder under each eye before you start your make-up. For best results, use a small cosmetic sponge.

Second powder tip: Volume and length for short, thin lashes

If you have short, thin lashes, try dusting them with a little powder before applying mascara.

To add length, apply some mascara to the ends of the lashes, let dry and then apply a second coat, wiggling the brush from the base to the tip. Double-coating the tips will make your lashes look longer and add volume without weighing them down.

Mascara Tip

If your mascara brush picks up too much product, wipe off the excess on a cosmetic tissue.

Never scrape the brush on the lip of the tube as this can lead to an uneven result and a build-up of dried product on the rim.

Tip for fuller lashes

If you intend to apply more than one coat of mascara, wait a little while after the first one to let the product dry before proceeding with the next one. This will help prevent clumping.

Look after your favourite mascara

To keep the texture of your mascara smooth and creamy, carefully twist the wand out of the tube instead of pumping it. This helps prevent excess air from getting into the tube, as this can dry out your mascara.

Pro tip: Change your mascara!

You should change your mascara at least every six months. Over time, bacteria can accumulate in the product, plus dried mascara isn’t good for your lashes as the texture can cause unnecessary stress and damage to fine hairs. To remove dried-out mascara from your wand, simply run it under hot water.

Insider tip: tools for definition

It’s worth investing in a good eyelash comb. This classic helper can quickly separate stuck lashes.

Don’t have one? No problem! Carefully wash out an old mascara wand and use it to comb your lashes. It’s just as effective and more eco-friendly!

Important: Carefully clean your eyelash comb or repurposed mascara wand with warm water after each use, otherwise the bristles will end up caked in residue.

Make-up tip: Natural brown tones

If your skin and hair are on the fair side and you prefer a natural everyday look, it’s best to avoid jet black mascara and opt for a soft brown shade instead. This will reduce the contrast between the lashes and your complexion and create a more natural effect.

Obviously, you can still use the above tricks for extra volume and hold and create fuller looking lashes.

Go mascara-free from time-to-time!

Not even the most sophisticated eye make-up will work if your lashes get too short and brittle, so treat them to a little TLC a few times a week!

Use a nourishing serum to regenerate and strengthen your lashes. The beneficial ingredients will pamper them from root to tip and provide them with lasting moisture.

Use the serum on mascara-free days or before bed to give it plenty of time to exert its beneficial effects. This will leave your lashes perfectly prepared for the next big event!
