All for the good of the environment

It is our highest goal to protect nature - our living space and the source for all of our actions - sustainably and holistically.

Even when extracting our raw materials, we pay attention to the highest (organic) quality and the most local origin possible. We work hard to keep our energy use as low as possible — and we’re proud to run entirely on 100% green electricity. At our Bantorf site, a state-of-the-art solar power system produces about 20% of the renewable energy we need for our production and logistics.

Sustainability is part of everything we do. That’s why we use as much recycled material as possible in our packaging and are always finding new ways to reduce it even further.

Caring for animals has been at the heart of our philosophy from day one. Most of our products are now vegan — and since November 2020, we’ve been honored to appear on PETA’s cosmetics whitelist.

It's nice when someone recognises what we do in terms of sustainability. Especially when they are independent juries and institutions. We have been one of the top sustainable brands and companies for years. Since 2016, we have been among the top 5 at the German Sustainability Award with lavera.

At the presentation of the German Sustainability Award 2022, we were honoured twice: lavera Naturkosmetik was one of the seven "most sustainable finalists in Germany" in the "Design Cosmetics" competition with the Natural & Strong Deodorant Cream launched in 2021. And the manufacturer Laverana was also voted among the top 7 in the "Companies in the Transformation Field" competition for the "Biodiversity" category. In 2023, Laverana, the company behind the lavera natural cosmetics brand, was named the winner of the German Sustainability Award in the transformation field of resources.

In 2023, we were also awarded the GREEN BRAND for the 6th time in a row for our sustainable and ecological actions. Lavera even awards coveted prizes for sustainable action, such as the "Victoire de la Beauté" in France or the "Free From Skin Award" in the UK.

We’re already going ahead

lavera is a sustainable company

Sustainability is not a catchphrase for us, but a corporate culture that has been lived since our foundation.

At Laverana GmbH & Co. KG, we are committed to reducing our CO₂ emissions through targeted efficiency measures and continuous innovation. Each year, we calculate the remaining CO₂ emissions generated by our company and products. These residual emissions are then offset through the purchase of verified CO₂ certificates that support high-quality climate protection projects — enabling us to achieve climate neutrality on our balance sheet.

We take the principle of “avoid, calculate, offset” seriously. As part of our comprehensive climate strategy, we first focus on avoiding and reducing emissions wherever possible through our own initiatives. Only then do we calculate our annual CO₂ footprint and offset the remaining emissions by funding selected climate protection projects.

Through the use of energy-saving technologies and optimised production processes, we are constantly improving the energy efficiency of our operations. Our new logistics center in Bantorf, for example, was built to the highest energy efficiency standards.

Our commitment to quality and sustainability also extends to the design of our buildings. With modern technologies such as heat recovery systems and twelve-centimeter mineral wool insulation on ceilings and exterior walls, we save approximately 82,000 kg of CO₂ per year. In addition, our large-scale photovoltaic system contributes further to our renewable energy generation and emission reduction goals.

Beyond operational measures, we are also investing in regional climate action. This includes reforestation projects in Germany that strengthen local forests and help them become more resilient to climate change.

Together with the German Forest Protection Association and Climate Partner, we have also planted the first 30,000 trees on damaged forest areas in the Hanover area. We have thus reached another milestone on the way to even greater environmental compatibility.

For each financial year, we examine our entire value chain and create a carbon footprint. The carbon footprints prepared for our company in accordance with the principles of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol are thoroughly reviewed and confirmed by TÜV Rheinland.

Climate protection projects that help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are also always development projects. These projects help the local people and are based on the official 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

How we support climate projects

One example of our support is the project in India. There, we provide solar lights, water filters and efficient cooking stoves, helping to improve the quality of life of the local population while reducing environmental impact. These technologies help reduce dependence on traditional and high-pollution energy sources and promote sustainable lifestyles.

In Kenya, Cambodia and Malawi, we support projects that provide clean drinking water through the use of water filters. In recent years, these measures have helped to significantly reduce the rate of illness and provide millions of litres of clean drinking water. In Malawi, for example, we provide local families with access to clean, free drinking water through repaired or new wells. Defective wells are located, repaired or maintained, and where necessary, new wells are built.

Through our funding, we not only want to promote environmental sustainability by protecting the environment, but also show that such projects also serve social sustainability, as they make important and valuable contributions to improving living conditions in the affected regions.

The future of our planet has been close to our hearts since our founding in 1987. From the very beginning, our goal has been to preserve the beauty and uniqueness of nature for future generations — just as we found it.

As an independent, family-run, medium-sized company, we have the freedom to shape our business in alignment with our sustainable values. One key advantage: our closed competence and value chain. All research, development, and production take place right here in the Hanover region.

This allows us not only to ensure the highest quality in every product, but also to make each step of our process as sustainable as possible — and continuously improve it further.

Trust is good, control is better
