The use of PHA in cosmetics

You’ve likely come across the term “natural PHA” in the world of cosmetics- but what exactly are PHAs? Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are a type of hydroxy acid known for their gentle exfoliating properties. Unlike harsher exfoliants, PHAs work by dissolving dead skin cells without causing irritation, making them ideal for sensitive skin. One common natural PHA is gluconolactone. In addition to exfoliation, PHAs also hydrate the skin and offer antioxidant, keratolytic, comedolytic, and cell-renewing benefits. The result? A smoother, more radiant, and healthy-looking complexion.

Things Worth Knowing About PHA

Natural PHA- like the gluconolactone we use- is derived through the fermentation of glucose and appears as a white crystalline powder. Unlike alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), gluconolactone has a more superficial effect and doesn’t penetrate as deeply into the skin. This makes it especially gentle and well-tolerated, making it a great choice for sensitive skin types.

PHA works on the surface of the skin, where it provides antioxidant protection, gently exfoliates, and helps dissolve blackheads. By removing dead skin cells, gluconolactone promotes faster cell turnover and supports the skin’s natural regeneration process- resulting in a smoother texture and healthy glow. additionally, PHAs help strengthen the skin barrier and boost hydration, leaving your skin looking refreshed and radiant.
